OREGON DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS AFFAIRS AWARDS SOURCE ONE SERENITY TO IMPLEMENT RECREATIONAL OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES FOR OUR VETERANS TO IMPROVE THEIR MENTAL HEALTH
We are very excited to implement outdoor recreational activities and community projects for local veterans in collaboration with NeighborWorks Umpqua, Chadwick Clubhouse, and Orchard Knolls Apartments Property. The program will also facilitate activities of the Whole Health Program at the Roseburg VA Healthcare System. Source One Serenity’s program builds a strong network with the local organizations that will lead to improved access to social determinants of health for veterans in Douglas County.
Source One Serenity will implement the activities in 2021; planning and coordination of these activities are already in process. A calendar of the outings will be accessible on the website of www.sourceoneserenity.org, where participants will be able to sign up. The activities will include fly fishing, hiking, and walking destinations mostly in the Umpqua National Forest. Source One Serenity is also planning outings to the coast to hike, walk, and visit beaches. It is exciting to implement this program thanks to a collaboration with Chadwick Clubhouse that will provide their van to transport veterans. A lack of transportation services in Douglas County was always an obstacle for Source One serenity to serve a larger number of veterans. Chadwick Clubhouse supports people living with mental health conditions by providing a non-clinical community of recovery through meaningful relationships and work experience. Chadwick Clubhouse also serves veterans who will be able to attend these outings as well.
The program for veterans also includes exciting community projects. Some of them are still in planning, and one of them will be to rebuild a plank house, a simple structure used as a home by the Northwest Coast Native Indian Tribes. Source One Serenity is thrilled to work with the local Native Americans. The plank house is located within walking distance from the Deer Creek Village, which is being constructed by NeighborWorks Umpqua and will open as an affordable housing property with 68 units focused on veterans. Source One Serenity will collaborate with NeighborWorks Umpqua to facilitate strong outreach efforts through direct contact with the veteran residents of Deer Creek Village and also Eagle Landing, another property NeighborWorks Umpqua manages.
As Source One Serenity is an advocate of a holistic approach and mindfulness, it will also facilitate valuable services of the Whole Health Program at the Roseburg VA Healthcare System. Activities offered will include: a Mindfulness Stress-Reduction Course, Mindfulness meditation drop-in sessions, Taking Charge of my Health and my Life, Yoga, Tai Chi, Qigong, and sweat lodges. Source One Serenity will provide communications and transportation services. The program in 2021 is for all veterans in the community. Sign up for updates.
